Every family seems to have one. The person who swears they can predict rain by the way their joints behave. A gran rubbing her knuckles before a storm. An uncle declaring his knee has “started talking again”, which apparently means brollies tomorrow. The weather forecast comes on, the BBC says showers at four, and someone in the room mutters, “Told you. My hip felt it this morning.”
Charming folklore? Perhaps. Yet plenty of older people swear by it. You might even know the feeling yourself. The sky turns a dull shade of pewter. The air thickens. Then a familiar ache creeps into a knee or shoulder that was absolutely fine yesterday.

Scientists have wondered about this for years. If joints really do respond to changes in the weather, then millions of people may well be walking around with in-built barometers. The question, of course, sits somewhere between science and a chat down the pub. Is the body genuinely reacting to the atmosphere, or are we just blaming the clouds for aches that were already on the cards?

Scientists love data, and joints have provided plenty. One of the largest studies on this arrived in 2019 from an unusual source: smartphones.
Researchers invited thousands of people in the UK living with arthritis to log their daily pain levels on an app. Each day, participants recorded how their joints felt. At the same time, researchers quietly collected weather data from nearby meteorological stations—humidity, temperature, air pressure, wind speed, the lot. Millions of entries later, a pattern emerged.
Painful days tended to pop up just a touch more often when humidity was high and barometric pressure was low. Windy days also showed a modest link. Temperature, interestingly, played a smaller part than many people expected. The key word here is modest. The relationship existed, but it was more a gentle nudge than a shove. Weather influenced symptoms for some people, but it didn’t explain everything.

Other studies around the world tell a similar tale. Some spot small connections between weather and joint pain. Others find almost none at all. The findings bounce around like the British weather itself.
Why the muddle? Human bodies are complicated machines with plenty going on. Joint pain can depend on cartilage health, muscle strength, inflammation, sleep quality, stress levels, and body weight. Weather comes into that mix like an extra ingredient in a crowded recipe.
And then there’s the brain. Pain isn’t just in the joint – it travels along nerves and is interpreted by the brain. Expectations play a part too. So what should you do if your knees reckon they’ve predicted the last three rainstorms bang on? First, treat the feeling as a heads-up rather than a prophecy. Your body might just be responding to subtle changes in the air.
Second, keep joints moving even when the weather’s grim. A short stroll indoors, or some gentle stretching, can fight off stiffness. Movement keeps synovial fluid moving round the cartilage, helping joints glide more easily.
Third, build up strong muscles around wobbly joints. Strong quads support the knees. Strong glutes help the hips. Muscles are a bit like bodyguards, taking some of the load off the cartilage.
Finally, treat dramatic weather warnings from your elbow with a pinch of salt. If your shoulder swears there’s a storm coming, check the forecast anyway. The Met Office still has a slight edge over your rotator cuff.
That said, the old family tradition of joint-based forecasting does carry a grain of truth. Your body really is in constant conversation with its surroundings. So next time someone at the dinner table rubs their knee and announces rain, you might want to smile rather than roll your eyes. Your joints may be running their own little Met Office.
