A: Stress and libido are closely connected, so if your sex drive has disappeared after months of pressure, you’re experiencing a very common response. When we’re stressed, the body shifts into survival mode, prioritising immediate demands over functions that aren’t essential for getting through the day. As stress hormones such as cortisol remain elevated, desire often takes a back seat – it’s not essential.
It’s important to remember that libido isn’t a switch that simply turns on and off. Sexual desire is influenced by our physical health, emotional wellbeing, relationships, sleep, energy levels and overall life circumstances. Chronic stress can affect all of these factors, leaving you feeling disconnected from your sexuality and less interested in intimacy.
The good news is that a loss of desire due to stress is often temporary. Rather than putting pressure on yourself to “get your sex drive back”, focus on reducing stress where possible, improving rest, reconnecting with pleasurable activities and nurturing emotional intimacy if you’re in a relationship. Desire often returns when the mind and body feel safe, supported and less overwhelmed. If changes persist or are causing distress, speaking with a healthcare professional or psychosexual therapist can help identify any underlying factors and provide tailored support.
