Editorial Column: “Why I Walk Every Day and Why You Might Want to as Well”

May is National Walking Month, which feels like the right moment to talk about something that has quietly become one of the most important parts of my day. Walking started as a way to clear my head during busy periods, but over time it has become far more than that. It is now a consistent part of my routine, something I rely on when everything else feels a bit too full.

What I have come to appreciate most is how walking creates a natural pause. It slows things down just enough for you to notice what is actually happening around you, which is something many of us rarely do anymore. There is no rush, no urgency and no real expectation beyond putting one foot in front of the other. That shift in pace changes everything.

What I have come to appreciate most is how walking creates a natural pause. It slows things down just enough for you to notice what is actually happening around you, which is something many of us rarely do anymore.

When I walk, I make a conscious effort to stay present. It does not always come easily, especially on days when my mind is already racing, but I have found small ways to bring myself back into the moment. I will focus on the detail in my surroundings, like the shape of the clouds or the way the light hits the pavement, or I will tune into the sounds around me, whether that is birds in the distance or the rhythm of my own steps. Sometimes I count those steps, not because the number matters, but because it gives my mind something simple to hold onto when it starts to wander.

Also Read: Editorial Column: “Stress Awareness Month is a good time to reflect on something that affects us all”

There is also something quietly powerful about using a walk as a form of decompression. The day can build up in ways you do not always notice at the time, with small stresses stacking on top of each other until everything feels heavier than it should. Stepping outside and moving through fresh air creates a release that feels both physical and mental. Thoughts begin to organise themselves, tension softens and problems that seemed overwhelming indoors often feel more manageable when you give them space.

If staying present feels difficult, it helps to approach it with a bit of intention rather than pressure. You might choose to focus on one sense at a time, noticing what you can hear, smell or feel as you move. You could slow your pace for a few minutes and let yourself properly take in your surroundings, or leave your headphones behind occasionally to experience the quiet without distraction. Even something as simple as lifting your gaze and looking ahead instead of down at a screen can shift your perspective more than you expect.

Alongside the mental reset, the physical benefits of walking are steady and reliable. Regular walking supports heart health, improves circulation and helps regulate blood sugar levels, while also strengthening muscles and joints without placing them under excessive strain. It can contribute to better sleep and a more balanced mood, which are often the first things to slip when life becomes busy.

What makes walking stand out is how accessible it is.

You do not need a certain level of fitness to begin, and you do not need to commit to anything complicated. It fits around your day rather than demanding that your day revolves around it, which makes it far easier to sustain over time.

You do not need a certain level of fitness to begin, and you do not need to commit to anything complicated. It fits around your day rather than demanding that your day revolves around it, which makes it far easier to sustain over time.

In a world that often encourages intensity and constant optimisation, walking offers something quieter and, in many ways, more sustainable. It creates space to think without overthinking, to move without pressure and to reset without needing to escape completely. Over time, those small daily walks begin to shape how you feel in a much bigger way than you might expect.

So if May is a reminder of anything, it is that progress does not always have to be dramatic. Sometimes it looks like stepping outside, paying attention to where you are and allowing yourself a moment to simply walk.
