Editorial Column: “Stress Awareness Month is a good time to reflect on something that affects us all”

April is Stress Awareness Month, which feels like a good moment to be honest about something we all experience but rarely step back and look at properly.

Stress is part of life. It shows up in work, in family, in the small decisions and the bigger ones that sit in the background longer than we would like. There isn’t a switch you can flick to remove it. What you can do is build a way of living that makes it easier to carry.

That has taken me time to understand.

For a long time, I thought the answer was pushing harder. Getting through more. Reacting quicker. Staying on top of everything at all times. It sounds productive on paper. In reality, it just keeps your mind in a constant state of tension.

What has made the difference is something far less dramatic. It’s how the day is set up before anything has a chance to pull it off course.

What has made the difference is something far less dramatic. It’s how the day is set up before anything has a chance to pull it off course.

My mornings are where that starts.

I wake up early, around six, but there’s no rush to it. No reaching straight for messages or emails. I’ll sit with a coffee for a few minutes in complete quiet. No noise, no input. It’s a simple pause, but it creates space before the day begins asking things of you.

That space matters more than it sounds.

Also Read: Editorial Column: Perfection is a unicorn we’re all meant to ride

From there, I take the dogs out. It’s the same route most days, the same rhythm. There’s no real agenda to it. Just walking, thinking, letting things settle into place. By the time I get back, I’m ready to start, but not already drained by everything waiting on my phone.

That early structure carries through the rest of the day.

Before anything else, I’ll look ahead. What actually needs to happen. What can wait. Where the pressure points might sit. It’s a small habit, but it stops the day from running away with you. When you start in control, you’re far less likely to spend the rest of it chasing.

That way of thinking goes back a long way for me. I read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People years ago, and one idea stuck. Begin with the end in mind. Act with intent, not urgency. It sounds simple, but it changes how you approach everything. You stop reacting to noise and start focusing on what actually matters.

Training is another part of that foundation. Not for appearance, not even purely for fitness, but because it clears your head in a way very little else does. An hour in the gym, focused and uninterrupted, has a way of simplifying things. Problems feel more manageable. Decisions feel clearer. You leave with more than you arrived with.

Training is another part of that foundation. Not for appearance, not even purely for fitness, but because it clears your head in a way very little else does.

None of this is complicated. That’s the point.

It’s a series of small, repeatable actions that give you something solid to stand on when everything else feels busy or uncertain. Without them, it’s very easy to drift into reacting to whatever comes next.

And that’s usually when stress starts to build.

I’ve also learned that switching off isn’t always straightforward, especially when you run a business. The line between work and everything else can blur quickly. Sitting in front of a screen doesn’t always feel like rest when your mind is still running.

That’s where contrast becomes important.

Watching sport helps. It pulls your attention somewhere else for a while. Driving with music on, no interruptions, no decisions to make, does the same thing. They’re simple moments, but they give your head a break from constant input.

Over time, you realise those breaks aren’t optional. They’re part of keeping everything else working.

Over time, you realise those breaks aren’t optional. They’re part of keeping everything else working.

When things do feel heavy, the instinct is often to speed up. To try and get through it quicker. I’ve found it works better to do the opposite. Slow things down, think clearly, and deal with what’s actually in front of you rather than everything at once.

That approach isn’t about avoiding pressure. It’s about meeting it in a better state.

Stress doesn’t disappear. Life doesn’t suddenly become calm and predictable. What changes is how you handle it. You build a day that supports you, rather than one that constantly takes from you.

And if there’s one thing I’d leave with you this month, it’s this.

You don’t need to overhaul your life to feel better. Start with one small decision that gives you back a bit of control. A quiet ten minutes in the morning. A walk without your phone. A session in the gym where you’re fully present.

Stack enough of those moments together and things begin to shift.

Not overnight. But steadily.

And that’s usually how real change happens.
